Research into Music Videos

Wonderman by Tinie Tempah and Ellie Goulding
Here is the link to the music video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-FWDsXUCes
On the music video wonderman the basic plot is about a man surviving a space shuttle crash and he is rebuilding his mental and physical health. From this music video i have learnt that the video must first link in with the title of the song, but also have a mini story in there. For example the wonderman music video has a mini story about some man who is an astronaut. Also in this music video the main character is made out by the narrator to be some sort of hero.
This video has the conventions of a story because he is injured in a space shuttle crash and is given electronic body parts. Which he uses to help people for example the women with the bomb attached to her. The whole performance is around Tinie Tempah and Ellie Goulding who are the artists of the song. There is a narrator at the start and end of the music video which tells you about the powers of the wonderman. The editing is to the beat and also when there is lip-syncing needed. On the two main characters they mainly use medium to long shots to show their importance. The main artist in this music video is represented as a superhero and the other artist is his doctor. You can tell this by the way they used mise en scene because she is dresser like a doctor and is holding clipboard. This music video is targeted at teenagers and young adults. I like this music video because of the story going on in the background which relates to the lyrics of the song.

Underdog by Kasabian

On the music video underdog the basic plot is about a live concert. The genre of this song is indie, you can tell this by the way the whole music video has been grey scaled which could represent many different themes including the time period or what the music is supposed to represent. The conventions of all music videos are that they are all the same length of the song, they also present the band and who look as though they are singing, and also music videos all have lots of fast paced edits. At the start of this music video the editing is low paced as the beat of the music is slow, until the music starts to pick up. This performance is of a live concert, which suggest that this band are as good live as they are recorded for this music video, the editing is on the beat which is good because will no when there is new shot. This will stick in their heads and when they listen to the song they will be able to memorise the music video. The most dominant shot is a medium shot which shows the different ban members. Also there are a lot of pans which show the viewer what it would be like if you’re at their live concert. The genre is represented by the grey scale used which shows the soft rock. This is targeting young males, I like this music video because it is not just a music video but shows what the concerts are like.

Earth Song by Michael Jackson
On this music video the earth song the basic plot is about how people have destroyed the planet. The first half of the music video is about the destroying of the earth and the second part of the music video is about the earth recovering from the destruction. I think this is a very interesting video because you see what the song is all about. The conventions of this music video are that the song is about the earth regenerating so it would make sense if the music video was set in lush vegetation. the music video does relate to the video. in all their narrative music video's I have researched I've found that they all match the lyrics with the music video. the music video is edited on the lyrics because it shows what he is talking about. The dominant shots are close ups on Micheal Jackson and long shots showing their landscape. the artist is represented as environmentally friendly because the song is about saving the earth. I think that this song is targeting everyone because everyone lives on the earth.

To link the research closer to what we needed we asked people how they thought our song was about and how good it was.
